Same Family, Different Colors: Confronting Colorism in America’s Diverse Families (Beacon) is a new book by Lori L. Tharps. A meditation on skin color politics and family dynamics, the book explores the impact skin color differences have on nuclear families. Beginning with her own personal story as the Black mother of three biracial children with three distinct skin tones, Tharps then shares the stories she’s collected from African American, Latino, Asian American and Multiracial people who have experienced family life where people were the same race but different colors. In order to contextualize these intimate stories, Tharps also includes the cultural history of these unique ethnic groups in order to explain how and why skin color became so significant in determining beauty, worth and access. Sprinkled throughout the pages of the book are the voices of pop culture pundits and cultural experts who offer their advice and expertise on the subject of colorism.

Written for a mainstream audience, Same Family, Different Colors is one of the first books of its kind to explore the taboo topic of colorism in multiple cultures. Colorism is an equal opportunity disease and this book was written to help find a cure; through conversation, communication and activism.
